Shopify Description Checker — Claims, Formatting & Thin Content
Shopify is more permissive than a marketplace: there is no listing approval step, which means whatever you publish goes live to every shopper and every search engine immediately. The constraints that remain are consumer-protection law, Shopify’s Acceptable Use Policy and basic copy quality — exactly the patterns this checker flags. Paste a description to check it, or connect your store with a custom-app token and run the same checks on live copy.
Or scan live products from your store
Paste a custom-app access token and this panel fetches your ten most recent products from the Shopify Admin API, then runs the same checks on each description — right here in this page. The token is used once for the request: never stored, never logged, never sent anywhere else. A token with only read_products scope is enough, and you can uninstall the custom app afterwards to revoke it.
What this checker inspects
- Therapeutic wording — "cures", "treats", "heals", "prevents" — claims that demand competent, reliable evidence under the FTC substantiation standard
- Regulatory red flags: "FDA-approved" and "clinically proven" without a citable source
- Absolute and hype phrases: "miracle", "100% safe", "risk-free", "doctor recommended", "guaranteed results"
- ALL-CAPS shouting, runs of "!!!" punctuation and emoji overload
- Thin descriptions (under 125 characters) that give shoppers and search engines little to work with
- Keyword stuffing — one word repeated so often the copy reads as spam
- Prices written inside the copy, which go stale the moment you run a sale
What it cannot do
- Whether your claims are factually true — no checker can verify facts; keep evidence behind every objective claim
- How your theme actually renders the description — raw HTML is flagged, but the visual result is only visible on your storefront
- Category-specific rules (supplements, cosmetics and medical devices carry their own regimes) and any Shopify or payment-provider review — their decisions are their own
Examples: flagged copy and safer rewrites
“Our miracle cream CURES dry skin!!! FDA-approved and 100% safe for everyone.”
Why it is risky: A therapeutic claim ("cures"), a regulatory red flag ("FDA-approved"), ALL-CAPS shouting, triple punctuation and an absolute safety claim — five high-severity signals in one sentence.
Safer direction: A daily moisturising cream with ceramides and shea butter for dry skin. Patch-test friendly, with the ingredient list and usage guide in the product photos.
“Lose 10kg in one week — guaranteed results or your money back.”
Why it is risky: An outcome guarantee plus a health result no product can promise every shopper; weight-loss claims are among the most heavily enforced areas in advertising law.
Safer direction: Designed to support your existing fitness plan. Pair with a balanced diet — individual results vary.
“Bottle”
Why it is risky: A one-word description gives shoppers nothing and search engines less — the thin-content signal.
Safer direction: Insulated 750ml stainless steel bottle with a leakproof lid: cold for 24 hours, fits car cup holders, dishwasher safe.
Frequently asked questions
- Is my store token safe?
- The token is sent once per scan to fetch your ten most recent products from the Shopify Admin API, then used for nothing else: it is not stored, not logged and not forwarded anywhere. A token with only the read_products scope is enough, and you can uninstall the custom app immediately afterwards to revoke it.
- Does Shopify have description rules like Amazon?
- No marketplace-style approval exists — but the FTC substantiation standard, Shopify’s Acceptable Use Policy and your payment provider’s restricted-business rules all still apply. Quality also matters for search: thin, stuffed or shouty copy ranks poorly and converts worse.
- Should I use HTML in the description?
- Shopify’s rich-text editor covers most needs, and hand-written HTML can break theme layouts. The checker flags raw HTML so you remember to verify the rendered result on your storefront.
- How long should a Shopify product description be?
- There is no hard limit. Under roughly 125 characters is a thin-content signal; beyond that, write until the specifics run out — materials, dimensions, use cases, care. Clear and specific beats long every time.
Limitations
- Text patterns only: the checker cannot see your theme, your storefront or your category’s specific legal regime.
- It cannot verify that a claim is true — evidence stays your responsibility.
- Shopify, payment providers and regulators make their own decisions; a clean scan is not an approval.
- The live-store scan is read-only and fetches at most 10 recent products per request.
